Humans driving extinction faster than species can evolve, say experts by Juliette Jowit guardian.co.uk Sunday 7 March 2010
Picture: This animal is just one of a few animals who are becoming extinct. The animal in this picture is a kouprey and is threaten of becoming extinct because of hunting, diease, its habit was taken over and other factors. This shows how humans are impacting the chances of species becoming extinct.
Summary: Humans have taken over the world and in the process of doin so they have impacted the different species that live on this earth. Humans are taking species' land, hunting species, and not caring about them. If this continues the world will become close to the "sixth great extinction" of species. Studies have shown that the rate of species becoming extinct is greater than species evolving. This is happening all over the world and needs to stop. Luckily there are new species that are evolved every year that are unknown. Extinction is part of life but it is starting to become a problem.
Reflection: I never realized how big of an impact humans have on species. I hope we find a way to prevent anymore animals from becoming extinct. I personally don't hear that much about animals becoming extinct and this article helped me to realize importance of this topic and that things need to change. I am disappointed to hear that extinction is becoming more common and I definitely hope it comes to an end.
Questions:
Do you think that humans will ever find a way to come together and prevent extinction?
Do you feel it is right taking species' land to benefit us humans?
What are some things humans can do to prevent extinction?
Do humans need animals or do animals need humans? Why?
Are Humans the main cause of extinction? If not what is?
I really think humans should stop harming the lives of animals. Many animals are becoming extinct and it needs to be stopped. Like Grant said, I do not usually hear about endangered animals and I think that could be the reason they are being harmed. If people knew about the affects I think they would try and stop it. Hopefully, we will find a way to end this.
ReplyDelete1. Besides human impacts, what are some other ways that animals are becoming extinct?
2. Do you think people are aware enough of endangered animals? Why?
3. Why do you think people aren't doing enough about helping endangered animals?
Answer to question 1- I think humans will eventually find a way to prevent extinction but only if we are aware of it. Now that is it becoming a more well known topic, there will be more people working to prevent it.

This is an article about why we must conserve sea turtles.
Opinion/Reflection: I completely agree with Grant how we never hear about extinction. I think if the media would put this in the news we would have a better understanding of why animals are becoming extinct and be more aware of what's going on. But i really hope that we all become more aware soon because if the extinction rate keeps going up we are in real trouble.
ReplyDeleteAnswer to do you feel it is right taking species' land to benefit us humans?
No I do not think it is right because we are taking so much. We are overharvesting and taking too much land that we don't need. If we could take a smaller ammount of land I believe that extinction rates would go down. We are being to greedy and need to stop taking so much. We need to be more aware of the environment and stop taking so much land that is the species.
Opinion/Reflection: I have never realized how much of an impact humans had on other species. I knew that all species impact each other, but the fact that humans are leaving such a negative impact on animals is upsetting to me. Knowing that we are creating the 6th massive extinction is also upsetting. If you think about it, the earth has been around for billions of years, and there has only been five mass extinctions, but we are now creating the 6th is a big deal. I think that humans should do something about this because it could end up affecting us in ways we don’t know yet. This summary was very interesting, so I am glad I got a chance to read it.
ReplyDeleteExpansion: The entire summary was about extinction in general, and how humans affect extinction, so here is a list of ten amazing animals that have become extinct over the years. Here it is: http://www.oddee.com/item_88742.aspx
Three other Questions:
1. Do you think that some humans realize they are affecting other species? If they knew, do you think they would stop what they are doing?
2. Do you think humans are the only one causing the 6th mass extinction that may occur?
3. What are some things that humans do in their daily life that are putting a negative impact on animals?
I would also like to add that in class we learned that if humans continue to cause a negative impact on the species, there will be a 6th mass extinction. Also, the extinction rate is growing rapidly
DeleteI am shocked how much humans can mess up an animals existence. I don't think people realize how much damage they do to these animals lives. I definitely agree with Grant. I think if people would show commercials and put out advertisements about extinction. This will give people like us that have never realized about extinction an opportunity to help. I hope this problem starts to end or get better soon.
ReplyDeleteAnswer to question 1: I think it is not right to take these animals habitats for our benefits. I think it would be appropriate to builds things if you do research and find out if they are harming any species.
I would like to add to my comment that i learned in class that humans have raised the extinction rate a thousand times more than the average rate. If this continues this could result in a 6th mass extinction.
